GelSight Svelte: MIT’s Finger-Shaped Sensor for More Dexterous Robots

Here is a camera-based touch sensor that is curved and shaped like a human finger. It provides high resolution tactile sensing over a large area. The GelSight Svelte uses two mirrors to reflect and refract light so one camera can see along the entire finger’s length.

MIT engineers used these sensors to create a robotic hand that was able to grasp heavy objects like humans. The above video shows it in action.
